Considered to be the divine consort of Lord Brahma, Goddess Saraswati is the goddess of knowledge, wisdom, arts & music. While Devi Saraswati possesses the power of speech, knowledge & learning she is also regarded as the dispeller confusion and chaos with her calm and soothing face. Dressed in a beautiful white sari she’s usually portrayed playing her Veena sitting on a blossomed white lotus. A peacock and a swan always accompany her. Also known as Goddess Gayatri or Goddess Savitri, Devi Saraswati is a part of the trinity of Goddesses along with Goddess Parvati & Goddess Laxmi.
The book in Goddess Saraswati’s hand denotes the perpetual knowledge and her excellence of the Hindu scriptures. The color white symbolizes pureness and her denial of everything that is materialistic. The white lotus depicts the absolute reality and it submits that the Goddess herself is also deep-rooted in the supreme reality. The Swan characterizes the refinement between the evil and the good, the endless and the temporary. Concentration, intelligence, observance, and character; this four aspects are depicted by the four arms of Goddess Saraswati. The peacock represents pride over its exquisiteness while Goddess Saraswati communicates that physical appearance could be misleading, by not taking peacock as the vehicle. Goddess Saraswati proposes that one should be prudent regarding the eternal truth.
